Recent legislation in Europe requires all websites to ask permission before storing cookies on a user’s computer. As a result, any European website will show the following pop-up in the bottom left corner:

Because recent legislation requires websites to obtain explicit consent before leaving behind or reading files (mostly cookies) on user’s computers, web designers need to make the use of cookies very obvious to users.

Cookie Control does just that, presenting users with clear information on whether cookies are present, linking to their privacy policy (which should have specific information about what cookies are in use), and advising users on how to adjust browser settings and what cookies mean for them.

The law requiring websites to gain consent before storing cookies on user’s computers was passed in the UK in May 2011. The law has been adopted in most other EU states but there are some major differences in how each state interprets the cookie law.

If you encounter this pop-up on a website, you can click the X to close this box. Or, if you are more of the curious sort, go ahead and click read more to see what kind of information the cookie is trying to gather.
