Dan Bardin, Tech II’s CEO, pays a visit to Alpine Sport Shop.
Last Friday I visited Alpine Sport Shop while our team was installing a new video surveillance system. The staff at the shop is passionate about winter snow sports…alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. They consider it their mission to spread the excitement of enjoying an active winter lifestyle. Many years ago the owners, Jack and Cathy, purchased a phone system from us, so when it came time to choose a video surveillance system, they decided to go with a name they already knew and trusted: Tech II Business Services.
Upon entering the driveway of the shop, I immediately noticed the buildings ski chalet design. It’s located only minutes from downtown Saratoga, yet it seems like you’ve been transported to somewhere more reminiscent of a high-end outfitter in Vermont, rather than a shop just down the road from my office. Well-kept landscaping and plenty of trees, combined with ease of access and parking, really added to the attraction of the Alpine Sport Shop.
As I stepped into the chalet, my initial impression was reinforced by the layout and products offered- plenty of options, yet not so crowded that you feel you can’t comfortably navigate throughout store.
Rack after rack of top quality winter apparel.
As someone who appreciates quality (and a skier myself), I thought “How could I have not known about this local treasure?” They carry many of the name brands I’ve frequently shopped for, Marmot, Scott, Oakley, North Face, and the list goes on. I was met by store staff, who weren’t aware I was with Tech II, and I started to ask questions about the store and products out of genuine interest. The answers reminded me of why I’ve personally come to appreciate a boutique-like atmosphere with folks who are experts in the business. I find that one of the most frustrating experiences while shopping is when the person helping you reads a tag in response to your question about a product, typical of the big box type stores.
Last January there was an incident in which the Sport Shop fell victim to a group of serial robbers. The shop does have several systems in place, however they were overcome by the shoplifters and several thousand dollars’ in merchandise was stolen.
Although they reported the incident, they were told there wasn’t enough information for the police to take any action. While watching the news one night, Jack saw a report about a robbery of a furrier in Massachusetts, as well as a boutique clothing store right in Saratoga, and the subsequent arrest of the folks responsible. He, and others from the shop, recognized the group as the ones responsible for the robbery at Alpine. They followed up with the police, and the short answer they received was that since they didn’t have actual pictures, as the Saratoga Saddlery did, they weren’t willing to pursue the case any further.
Jack and Cathy decided a video surveillance system from Tech II would be a sound investment, in the event of any future incidents, and hopefully the presence alone would deter any would-be shoplifters. In addition to these benefits, they will be able to look in on the shop from anywhere, at any time, either with their mobile devices or from any PC connected to the internet. Now that’s peace of mind!
